The Route 231 reconstruction project will improve the ease of travel and overall safety along the busy Long Island area.

The modernization of the parkway’s interchange with Route 231 (Deer Park Road) in the town of Huntington will optimize the flow of traffic and boost access from the parkway to a critical roadway for both residents and businesses throughout western Suffolk County.

Often used by motorists headed to LaGuardia Airport and New York City, the parkway provides travelers with access to a significant number of popular state parks and shopping areas throughout Long Island.

"The completion of this critical infrastructure project will go a long way in keeping our residents safe and modernizing our roadways," said Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone.

Specific improvements made as part of the traffic optimization project include:

  • A new ramp from southbound Route 231 to eastbound Northern State Parkway, eliminating the left turn entrance
  • A longer exit ramp from eastbound Northern State Parkway to southbound Route 231
  • The widening and extension of the exit ramp from eastbound Northern State Parkway to northbound Route 231, providing an extra lane of traffic, a raised median on Deforest Road and a right turn only lane onto Route 231
  • A longer deceleration lane from westbound Northern State Parkway to northbound Route 231 and County Route 35
  • An extended acceleration lane from southbound Route 231 to westbound Northern State Parkway
  • A raised center median on Route 231 with reconfigured traffic signals
  • New right turning lanes for southbound and northbound Route 231 to eastbound Northern State Parkway
  • New sidewalks with enhanced pedestrian signals and ramps

Route 231 provides access to the downtown sectors of Huntington, Greenlawn, East Northport, Commack, and Northport on the North Shore, and Deer Park, North Babylon, West Islip, and Babylon on the South Shore.

"These projects will enhance safety and create an easier drive for thousands of motorists on one of Long Island's most heavily traveled roadways,” said Maria Therese Dominguez, Department of Transportation Commissioner.
